The Accelerate State of DevOps Report is the largest and longest running DevOps research. It represents five years of work surveying over 30,000 technical professionals worldwide. Nearly 1,900 professionals worldwide participated in the 2018 study that reflects an increasing diversity and the importance of continuous software testing.
The Accelerate State of DevOps Report examined teams to understand statistically how they are developing, delivering, and operating software systems. Benchmarks for high, medium, and low performers show where DevOps teams are in the context of multiple important analyses throughout the report.
The report benchmark found 7% of Elite performers, 48% of High performers, 37% of Medium performers and 15% of Low performers. The figure above shows how these different groups differentiate on the criteria deployment frequency, lead time for change, time to restore service and change failure rate. The study explains that the intent of reducing failure risks by deploying code less frequently often leads to a longest time to restore services. As organizations integrate more changes in their code deployment, it becomes more difficult to quickly find the cause of failure. The study provides an insight analysis of the different aspects of DevOps.
For software testing, the best DevOps best performers can be detected by a lower amount of manual work. The fact that medium performers are doing more manual work than low performers when it comes to software testing and change-approval processes is explained by a J-curve effect at the beginning of the DevOps journey where the change towards automation might initially create some technical debt. The final part of the report is dedicated to how cloud infrastructure usage is related to DevOps, but then the report has also Google Cloud as a main sponsor ;O) There is also some content on the importance of Lean & Agile culture and practices with cross-functional teams that implement continuous software testing.
